What is an AI readiness assessment?
An AI readiness assessment measures how prepared your business is to use AI successfully, and shows where the gaps are before you spend money. Most AI projects that stall do so because of missing foundations, such as unclear goals, scattered data, or tools that do not connect, not because the AI itself falls short.
This assessment scores five areas:
- Strategy and goals. Pick one business outcome, such as hours saved or faster lead response, and tie your first AI project to it.
- Processes. Write down how your most repetitive process runs today, step by step, before choosing any tool.
- Data. Get the data your first use case needs into one clean, accessible place, even if it is a well-kept spreadsheet.
- Tools and systems. Check which of your core tools can connect to others (APIs or integrations) and fill the gaps first.
- People and governance. Name an owner for AI, agree simple usage rules, and keep a person approving anything high stakes.
AI readiness checklist
The same ten questions as the assessment. If you can answer the strongest option for most of them, you are ready to put AI into production.
01
Do you have a clear business goal for using AI?
Strong answer: Yes, with targets we measure (such as hours saved or response time).
02
Is someone senior responsible for making AI work in the business?
Strong answer: A named owner with time and budget.
03
How much of your team's week goes to repetitive, rule-based work?
Strong answer: We have listed and measured the main tasks.
04
Are your key processes documented?
Strong answer: Documented and kept current.
05
Where does your business data live?
Strong answer: In core systems that are connected to each other.
06
How accurate and up to date is that data?
Strong answer: Reliable, with someone responsible for keeping it clean.
07
Do your main tools connect to each other?
Strong answer: Most tools are integrated and data flows automatically.
08
Do you already use any automation or AI tools?
Strong answer: Several automations running core processes.
09
How does your team feel about AI and automation?
Strong answer: Asking for it and helping shape it.
10
Do you have rules for how AI is used (data privacy, approvals)?
Strong answer: A clear policy with human review for high-stakes work.
The four AI maturity levels
| Level | Score | What it means | First step |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exploring | 0 to 34 | You are at the start, which is a fine place to be. The fastest progress comes from one concrete win, not a large AI strategy. | List the tasks your team repeats every week and estimate the hours. |
| Emerging | 35 to 59 | You have interest and some building blocks, but gaps in process, data, or connections will slow AI down. A small, well-scoped first project will teach you more than a big plan. | Document one repetitive process and measure how long it takes. |
| Ready | 60 to 79 | You are ready to put AI into production. Your foundations are in place; the risk now is spreading effort across too many pilots instead of shipping one that pays off. | Pick the single highest-value process and automate it end to end. |
| Advanced | 80 to 100 | You have the goals, data, systems, and team to run AI in core processes. The opportunity now is scale: more workflows, deeper automation, and measuring ROI across the business. | Build AI agents for multi-step workflows that currently need a person to coordinate. |

An AI readiness assessment measures how prepared a business is to use AI successfully. It looks at strategy and goals, processes, data, tools and systems, and people and governance, then shows where the gaps are and what to do first.
